|Rural Institute for Community Education (RICE) is a Non Governmental Organisation which is registered under Societies Act XXI of 1860 bearing Registration No.: 35 of 1984 with its Head Office at Guntur. Its basic motive is to provide community education to the poor and the down trodden communities in the rural and urban areas. The community education is mainly in the field of education, health and other upliftment programs.
The aims of the society are to serve the poor men, women, youth and children from the rural and urban communities irrespective of their caste, creed and religion by introducing the programs related to Socio-economic Development, Health and other related development activities. Most of the programs are to bring awareness through non-formal education, adult literacy, vocational training, health activities, cultural action and such other activities of community organisation. We foster in studies and field research on the dimensions and movements for social change and to disseminate useful information to the members and the public through the publication and distribution of useful literature, and through mass media organs. We also sponsor and hold consultations and conferences and other meetings on matters of public and sectional interest, and also conduct camps, schools, colleges and classes/courses for development of education. The society will promote community buildings through socially useful and economically productive projects for leadership formation and self reliance of all backward sections of people in general and of Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes communities in particular. The society also organises community welfare programs.
“Educate – Empower” is the basic principal to start the educational programs. So far RICE is involved in conducting Vocational Training Center at Sirupudi, dress making, carpentry, welding and T.V. mechanism, for unemployed youth. Adopted ‘60’ villages in Medikonduru Mandal and Pittalavanipalem Mandal and introduced Night Schools, Adult Education Centers for a period of ‘15’ years. Trainings were organised for health workers on herbal medicine.
Since ‘10’ years we had concentrated on the slums in and around Guntur City as so many people are migrating from villages and settled in this place. So, our educational programs are mainly based on empowering women, youth and children to gain knowledge in job oriented courses and the children to withstand the competition of school education
We had started “Bala Batas” which helps the government/municipal school going students to do their school work. In this program we also train the students in games, cultural activities and methods to be healthy. For the young generation we started Vocational Junior College in which we train them in job oriented courses like Multi Purpose Health Workers (MPHW) and Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT). Many students who had successfully completed their course got jobs immediately. Some students who are interested to persue higher education are given guidance to join in their concern courses at degree level. The students in these colleges are also given training in skits, stick dance and dance. Our society is associated with a few institutions which are Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Medical Lab Technology on same lines. We started Nursing College to provide better education for the Dalit Girl students.
RICE believes that, “if a woman is economically strong than the whole family is strong and well settled.” So, the women in the slums are mostly given training in self help programs. We teach them how to prepare pain balm, detergents, chalk pieces, floor cleaners and leaf plates. Tailoring is also taught. These training help them to be economically strong. We also train the women to develop kitchen gardens.
Our society took up various health programs with the help of students and staff of our nursing college. Free health camps are conducted nearly every year. Our society took up free health camps during the floods. Social Welfare hostels also availed our free camps. Students go to slums and treat the poor and the needy people through physiotherapy under Community Based Rehabilitation programs. Health awareness programs for prevention of various diseases like HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Cholera etc. are performed with the help of skits, dance and stick dance. Audio visual aids are also used to promote these programs. Blood donation camps are conducted every year in association with Red Cross and local blood banks. Students from our associated colleges participate in this program.
Our society is planning to improve education and health programs. We are planning to start programs in collaboration with the Government of India and Government of Andhra Pradesh to promote more developmental activities in and around Guntur City.
